Holiday Open House

I bet you never thought of Whimsies as a place to buy furniture, did you? Well guess again. If you have been by the store window in the last few days you saw three unique pieces of Dust Furniture we now have in stock. Along with all the amazing new glass, pottery, and jewelry we have received in anticipation of our annual Holiday Open House, you will see these cool cases you can use for all the great books we carry.

Books? Oh yes, we have books too. Not the usual best-sellers, but the kind of books that get buried in a normal bookstore. Do yourself a favor and read Hug Time by Patrick McDonnell. This is one of those kids books that is wonderful for any age.

Don't forget that this week is 3rd Friday. This month is special because it is the preview to our Holiday Open House on Saturday and Sunday. If you are on our snail-mail list you will get a post card on Tuesday. Come join the party.

Welcome to Whimsies!

I was asked to introduce Whimsies Incognito to you by my cyberspace-savvy coworkers. They have convinced a holdout in technological advances to take that step into the future and have a Web presence.

So here goes ...

Whimsies was the brainstorm of a woman who loved crafts and dabbling in them and was at a period in her life "floating" — working for somebody else, creating but not being creative, and, well, getting by.

A question of "What do you want to do?" led me down the road to this retail voyage that has to this point lasted 19 years. It is a labor of love — a living, breathing entity. A tribute to finding something that you love and putting your heart and soul into it.

The amazing fact is that it worked. It became a business that filled a need. It took a job I knew — retail — and turned it into a career. It filled in a niche in the landscape of downtown storefronts by providing a shopping experience that feels like one of those stores you visit while on vacation, yet it's in your backyard. It's brought many friends and acquaintances through my door and it's allowed me an opportunity to be part of a community.

Maybe for some of you this click will be a reintroduction to an old friend, and for others — welcome to the world of Whimsies.

Halloween in the Hudson Valley

Greetings, everyone!

October is upon us and, as you may know, Halloween is a big deal around here. Our little part of the Hudson Valley has plenty of spooky activities for you to check out.

If you find yourself wandering Main Street, please stop by and check out our great selection of Meadowbrook Gourds. This year we have some wonderful witch gourds.

Just yesterday, we received a shipment of Halloween cards you will really like. From watercolor to screen print to retro collage, we work hard to keep an interesting selection of greeting cards — no boring, generic cards here.

To stay in the spirit, we have a fun selection of Day of the Dead items too. And don't forget, we can wrap everything.

See you soon!
